If you are interested in video games, would you like to watch others playing games on YouTube? A great many people actually would. This is what made Evan Fong (popularly known as Vanoss for his YouTube gaming channel VanossGaming) famous. His channel is currently the 27th most subscribed channel on YouTube, with over 18 million subscribers and over 5 billion views on his videos (as of September, 2016). Evan basically uploads videos of him playing games with his friends, typically in a laughable or tricky situation, filled with funny commentary that his audience can enjoy watching. He has a huge collection of over 400 videos covering games like Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Grand Theft Auto V, Dead Rising 3, Garry's Mod and others. His videos are usually a compilation of 'funny moments' of his play-through of various games. He often collaborates with other YouTube gamers like H2ODelirious, Mini Ladd, Daithi De Nogla, Lui Calibre, etc. and plays the games together to create content for their channels. He has also worked with popular YouTubers such as Adam "SeaNanners" Montoya and Tom "Syndicate" Cassell, signing a contract in April 2015 for a multi-channel network founded by them.
According to Evan, if you are looking for video games, there is nothing on TV. As a result, young people turn to YouTube for such content. In today's time of huge AAA video game titles, it is hardly possible for everyone to experience everything on a certain game world. People can easily relate to others playing games they might have played and experience what they might or might not have experienced in their play-through of the same game. This plays a huge part behind the success of YouTube gaming channels. The YouTube fan base for video related content is huge, and the most viewed channel on YouTube, PewDiePie, is also a gaming channel. Notably, at one point, VanossGaming was attracting even more subscribers per day than PewDiePie.
Evan Fong dropped out of university in his second year to spend more time on his YouTube channel. This was not an easy decision as his parents didn't quite support this. Moreover, he himself was not sure of his success on YouTube as an alternative to a fulltime job. This delayed his decision to drop out of school, but he eventually did it when his channel started to gain popularity. He borrowed his gaming ID Vanoss from his father who used the name 'vanoss62' on his Playstation 3 account. Initially using Iron Man or Batman for his character model, Evan later switched to the Night Owl model that he uses now. In November 2015 he changed his 'VG' logo to reflect the Night Owl model with a prominent 'V' in it. Among the games that he has played, he is most fond of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Evan also worked as a creative director on a game called Dead Realm, which officially released in 2016. Playing hockey since the age of six, he has taken part in many hockey competitions and has played for 4 hockey teams. Apart from playing video games or ice hockey, he also likes playing the guitar.
Evan Fong is a Canadian born in Toronto, Ontario. His father is Chinese and his mother is Korean. When he started his YouTube channel, his parents encouraged him to focus on his education, though he didn't finish his economics course at university. He is currently not confirmed to be in a relationship.
Despite the fact that Evan Fong is one of the most successful YouTube gamers, he didn't play too many video games during his childhood. He was rather interested in ice hockey and was even pursuing an athletic scholarship. The very few games that he remembers playing as a child include Freddy the Fish, Pajama Sam, Duke Nukem 3D and Crash Bandicoot. YouTube was like a hobby that he didn't take quite seriously initially. After its creation in 2011, his YouTube channel was only mediocre in popularity for about a year and half. Later, when he started uploading a series of Call of Duty: Black Ops II 'funny moments' videos, his channel started to gain a lot of subscribers. His most popular game series, however, is Grand Theft Auto V. His series on GTA5 videos helped him to outrun many popular YouTubers. Later, his videos on Gary's Mod have been able to match up to the level of his GTA series.
